Stockholm, Lorentz Ludew. Grefing, 1740. 4to. [xiv] + 964 pp. + 1 engraved portrait + 1 folding engraved map. Title printed in red & black.
First Swedish edition of Barclay’s Argenis in a luxury binding by G. Hedberg (c. 1900). Evenly browned throughout, occasional finger-soiling and a few leaves slightly stained, spine a little faded. Bookplate: Pro Finlandia. Pro Finlandia 842.
There is evidence that Ericus Olai Lindeman began translating Argenis (1621) into Swedish as early as the 1650s. The present Swedish edition is the first, however, and a second, by Johan Ehrenström, followed in 1741.
