An original etching, uncut, with original colouring, from Carl August Ehrensvärd’s ”Resa til Italien” (Journey to Italy), 2nd edition, Stockholm 1819.
The 38 engravings were printed from the same copperplates as the extremely rare first edition (1786, intended for presentation only), and were coloured after 2 copies coloured by Ehrensvärd himself.
Ehrensvärd, a high-ranking military man as well as a draughtsman and artist, travelled to Italy in 1780-82, hurrying via Rome towards Naples and Sicily. In his book he compares different aspects of Southern Europe with the North, always preferring the former, which he greatly idealized. The engravings depict a rich variety of topographical views, costume, building types, physionomies, natural wonders and volcanoes.
