Article number: 4587
Folio, 2 pages of text in black ink with a few markings in blue crayon, 36 x 22 cms, dated Ösmo 5 September 1929 and addressed to ”Walle, Bror och kamrat!” (Wallentin Eliasson, editor of Sjömannen, where Martinson published several texts in these early years).
Signed with full name, ”Harry Martinson”. Leaves creased, frayed and worn.
The letter accompanied the manuscript of ”Nylyriskt Intermezzo”, a cycle of poetry which Eliasson accepted for publication in the September issue of Sjömannen (pp. 270-72). Martinson’s first book appeared later in the same month.
Part of the appeal of this important letter is the contemporary mention of both Martinson’s first books: his debut collection of poetry, Spökskepp, and Fem unga, an important Swedish anthology of modern poetry to which he contributed. Both apperaed in the autumn of 1929, on September 24 and November 6 respectively.
Harry Martinson was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature jointly with Eyvind Johnson in 1974.
