Three volumes, later half morocco, spines faded. Front printed wrappers of vol. 1 & 3 bound in. Pp. lxix–lxx + 2 portraits in volume one were added when printing of this volume had already been completed; these leaves are bound at the beginning.

Patrick Gordon (1635–1699) was a Scottish soldier of fortune who became a general in the Russian army and a close friend of Tsar Peter I. He originally enlisted at Hamburg in the Swedish military forces in 1655 and served alternately for Sweden and Poland in the following years. In 1661 he took service in the Russian army, where he enjoyed a very successful military career. During the revolution in Moscow in 1689 Gordon and his troops virtually decided events in the favour of Tsar Peter I, and after this Gordon remained high in the Tsar’s favour. General Gordon’s diary, written in English, was preserved in the archives of the Imperial Russian foreign office. It was published for the first time in the present German translation. The importance of this diary for the understanding of late seventeenth-century Russia has long been recognised and it is an outstanding source for the reign of Peter the Great.
